Privacy

The short version: your notes stay on your device unless you sign in to sync them. We only receive what's needed to check a problem, and we don't keep your files or pages.

On your device

Your sessions, review list, notes pages, stickers, saved pages, settings and tutor profile are stored in your browser (or, in the Windows app, on your computer). Clearing your browser data removes them. Without an account we can't see them.

If you sign in

An account is optional and has no password: we email you a sign-in link. We keep your email address and, so they appear on your other devices, your sessions (the questions, explanations, your answers and progress), your review list and your tutor profile. We don't sync your notes pages, photos or uploaded files. Sign-in lasts 60 days per device.

To delete your account and everything synced to it, use Delete account in the app's library. It's removed from our server right away; copies on your devices stay until you clear them.

When you build a session

The files you drop in (study guides, slides, screenshots) are read in your browser, then sent once to Anthropic to write the session. In the browser version they pass through our server, which does not keep them.

When you check work, ask for a next step, or ask a question

Circled sends a picture of your notes page (including any photo you added), the current question and its answer key, and your tutor profile with its list of recent mistakes. In the browser version this goes through our server to Anthropic, which runs the Claude model that reads it. Our server doesn't save the picture or the reply. In the Windows app it goes straight from your computer to Anthropic through your own Claude account.

Anthropic handles that data under its own commercial terms and privacy policy.

Photos from your phone

When you send photos from your phone to your notes, each photo waits on our server, in memory only, until your computer picks it up (within seconds), and is then gone. Unclaimed photos are dropped after 20 minutes.

Shared question sets

When you share a session, we store its questions and explanations so the link works. Your answers, progress and files are not included. Anyone with the link can open it. Ask us and we'll remove a set.

Usage limits

To keep checking free in the browser, our server sets a random ID cookie and counts how many checks each browser (or account) and network makes per day. The count resets daily.

The email list

If you join, we keep your email and what you said you're studying, and use them only to email you about Circled. We don't sell or share them. Reply to any email to be removed.

Age and schools

Circled is for students 13 and older. If you're under 13, don't create an account, join the email list or share anything. If we learn an account belongs to a child under 13, we delete it.

Circled is a tool individual students choose to use. It isn't set up to receive education records from a school or district. A school that wants to use it with students should contact us first to sort out an agreement.
